The Rooftop Lounges
Bars with a View
Fed up with Bangkok’s fume-filled streets? Fancy a breather? Take to the skies. Bangkok offers a clutch of dramatic high-altitude bars (both indoor and outdoor) from where to survey the glittering skyline below.

PANORAMA
Pan Pacific Bangkok, Rama IV Rd BTS Saladaeng
Tel: 02-632-9000
Website: www.panpacific.com
Opening Hours: 11.30am-2.30pm, 6pm-10.30pm

Ideal for interminably hot or drizzly nights, the Deck Bar is a low-slung little bar counter found in thepartitioned area at the rear of the
Pan Pacific’s up market Panorama
restaurant. Perfect for pre-dinner,
the wine-list here is a facsimile of
the restaurants (i.e. expansive and top-notch), and on cool nights thewindows are open to the night air and a 23rd floor view across Bangkok. Plunk yourself on one of its stools, order in a scotch and some fancy tapas, and let your eyes wander across the grounds of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club and up over downtown – not quite breathtaking, but still very Bangkok.

THREESIXTY
32nd Fl Millennium Hilton Bangkok 123 Charoennakorn Rd BTS Saphan Taksin
Tel: 02-442-2000
Opening Hours: 5pm-1am

A new beacon over Bangkok’snight sky is ablaze. Picture a gorgeously moody, sexy place with world-class jazz, awesome cocktails and hearty-stopping views. Add prices lower than other similar bars. Sprinkle with the fact that you’ll be part of the international trendsetter scene just because you’ve managed to cross the Chao Phraya. Sounds inviting? Head over to the spanking new Millennium Hilton and take the glass elevator to the 32nd floor. Up in the UFO-like construction, 130 meters high, ThreeSixty perfects a circle. Softest couches and smoothest cocktails enhance a dizzying view: Bangkok’s downtown and the row of riverside hotels spreads out in front of you. Good thing this place doesn’t revolves. It’s a bit too early to tell but we predict a grown-up crowd which values Osietra on blinis to their drinks. Pure Post-Millennium Magic. And do check out the lobby.

RED SKY
Centara Grand at CentralWorld Rama 1 Rd BTS Chit Lom/Siam
Tel: 02-100-1234
Website: www.centarahotelresorts.com
Opening Hours: 5pm-1am

Hi-octane views, svelte Martinis, rattan loungers to enjoy them on.Ironically, the only thing you won’tbe seeing at Centara Grande’s new, barely lit al fresco bar is red. When not gasping at the city smoldering like a faulty circuit-board beneath you, be entertained by the boomerang-like edifice changing colour above the translucent bar; or stargaze into the fibre-optic solar system in the curving, wood-panel wall. Sip a bottle from their space-age wine cellar, or a well-mixed cocktail; they shake everything from Ying Yangs to classic Caipirinhas. Fifty five floors below, it’s all car horns and consumer frenzy, but up here, glass in hand, live jazz wafting through the ether, not even a gust of wind can upset the cosmic balance – glass barriers mean there are, virtually, none.

LONG TABLE
48 Column Bldg, Sukhumvit Soi 16 BTS Asok, MRT Sukhumvit
Tel: 02-302-2557-9
Website: www.longtablebangkok.com
Opening Hours: 11am-2am

Top-end Thai food isn’t the
only thing drawing Bangkok’s
nouveau riche to this impossibly
swish restaurant-cum-bar in
droves. There’s also the trend-
setting twist: a sleek communal
dining table so long it makes a
medieval banquet bench look
positively petite. However, it’s
what happens at the end of the
room that propels this place deep
into the nightlife stratosphere.
Where the long table ends, a tall plate glass window and huge poolside patio, complete with bar, begins. Out here, 25 floors up, you can glug signature “long-tail” cocktails or fine new latitude wines with the best of high-flying Bangkok: a glitzy hotchpotch of celebrities, models and power players; hair-tousling breezes; and – best of all – widescreen city vistas.

SKY BAR
State Tower, 1055 Silom Rd
Tel: 02-624-9555
Website: www.thedomebkk.com
Opening Hours: 6pm-1am

High fliers hankering after a
taste for the dramatic can head
over to The Dome at State
Tower. Among the world’s highest outdoor bars, Skybar – attached to Med restaurant Sirocco – offers panoramic views of the city and river below, earning its popularity with visitors new to the City of
Angels and that intent on rediscovering it. Indoor-outdoor Distil boasts a roomful of comfy sofas, beyond-premium liquor and The Dome’s signature breathtaking view. Adjacent to Asian seafood eatery Breeze, Ocean 52 sports yet another stunning view from the 51st-52nd floors. These places are definately not spots for the casual beach bum; so be sure to leave your flip-flops and shopping bags at home – a strict smartcasual dress code is enforced.

MOON BAR
61F Banyan Tree Bangkok 21/100 South Sathorn Rd
Tel: 02-679-1200
Website: www.banyantree.com
Opening Hours: 5pm-1am

As the name suggests, this is
one place that will get you
closer to the moon. The open-air
bar lets you take in the urban
Moloch from up-above in smart
surroundings. Banyan Tree’s Moon Bar is a romantic hideaway. With stunning 360° views, the hotel’s rooftop has been turned into a slick
grill restaurant; one end is occupied by the bar. Nothing obstructs your view here, almost 200 metres high up. It’s the perfect spot for honeymooners – take a seat on the smart sofa stations, sip on a classy Martini or a yummy signature cocktail and feel romance welling up. For voyeurs, the telescope and binoculars come in handy. Glamour girls and unwinding business guys feel right at home here, too. Stay until the wee hours, nibble on sophisticated snacks, take in the light jazz – and never ever forget your camera.

Night Clubs

BARSU
Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, 250 Sukhumvit Rd BTS Asok, MRT Sukhumvit
Tel: 02-649-8358
Website: www.barsubangkok.com
Opening Hours: 6pm-2am

The informal yet sleek and minimally styled BarSu features the laglineb “eat, play, dance” and appeals to the over-30 Bangkok crowd who feel disenfranchised by the city’s current nightlife offerings. To this end, house, hip hop and techno are banned in-house DJs spinning soul, funk, rock, vintage 70s, 80s and world music. An audacious dining concept features a menu of sophisticated bar snacks created by a Belgian two-star Michelin chef. As gimmicks go, this one surely takes the cake (or, rather, the feather light crème brûlée). In all fairness, calling this premium fare “bar snacks” is doing it a disservice: it’s finger food designed to be shared – sushi, sashimi, tapas and “wapas” (world tapas) – although not finger food as you know it. While you’re still getting your head round one sly culinary twist (warm tom yum kung jelly, anyone?) you’re hit with yet another gastronomic slight of hand. The imaginative presentation throughout echoes the innovation of the dishes, and won’t murder your wallet. Ladies get a free standard drink on Wednesdays and the chance to win a bottle of Baileys.

BED SUPPERCLUB
26 Sukhumvit Soi 11 BTS Nana
Tel: 02-651-3537
Website: www.bedsupperclub.com
Opening Hours: 7:30pm-1am

'Bed,’ with its über-modern spaceship design, is a successful fine dining on what may be the world’s largest sofas on one side, and an
adjoining bar on the other. For the past five years, Bed has attracted
a fashionable crowd, and with its à-la-page white interior, is definitely a place to see and be seen. The food is world-class on the cosy restaurant side, and the sleek design extends to an all-white bar on the club side. Bed has talented resident DJs and brings over top-class world talent (including come very eclectic art) for special events. Tuesday’s Hip Hop party packs ‘em in while Wednesday’s Model Night throbs with tribal house music. Sunday is “Think Pink” and features a colorful Burlesque show.

CM2
Basement, Novotel Siam Square, Siam Square Soi 6 BTS Siam
Tel: 02-255-6888
Website: www.cm2bkk.com
Opening Hours: 6:30pm-2am

Bangkok’s party cave par excellence. Never mind the hotel setting – at least it stays open till 2am – this megaclub has everything you might want – and more. Get ready for main streamy beats and convincing live bands on the main dancefloor, harder techno stuff in the more intimate, energy-filled Boom Boom, and a vast karaoke complex for you wannabe crooners. The décor got stuck in the 80s (black and metal rule) but a stunning light system more than makes up for it. The place guarantees a fun and exciting night out but female punters better prepare themselves for some stares from nocturnal beauties. Prices are lower than in other hotel venues, and it’s younger, buzzier and flashier, too, an eye-opening experience.

FUNKY VILLA
Thong Lor Soi 10 BTS Thong Lor
Tel: 08-5253-2000
Opening Hours: 6pm-2am

The name Funky Villa conjures images of roller-blading 70s babes in bikinis, partying at a Hugh Hefner-like villain the Med. The reality’s different.Steer your way through the fairground-sized car park, past the BMWs and chic lounge-deck area, and you’ll hit a swish one-storey house, more posh than funky. Some of Bangkok’s gilded youth chill on sofas and knock pool balls around in the front room; but most hit the fridge-cool dancehall to boogie away the week’s woes to live bands and hip hop DJs. Forget edgy sounds – here it’s all about getting down and flirty with the CEOs of tomorrow.

Tel: 02-254-1234
Website: www.bangkok.grand.hyatt.com
Opening Hours: noon-2:30pm, 6:30pm-2am
After going strong for more than a decade, the mother of all live venues still doles out fantastic Italian food and cool bands. The food is so good lunches and brunches teem with high society types. Thai execs and bubbly after-work expats turn up from 7pm onwards to tuck into simple-soundings but first-class Italian specialties; it’s a pretty good value, especially considering this is a five-star hotel joint. Whatever you’ll try, have it with what must be Bangkok’s best sangria. Come 10pm, diners thin out when the live band starts pumping out high-energy songs which get the dance floor heaving with a mixed, grown-up crowd – weekend nights can see people queuing up to get in.

TAPAS
Silom Soi 4 BTS Sala Daeng, MRT Silom
Tel: 02-632-7982
Opening Hours: 8pm-2am

Located on the groovy little enclave of Silom Soi 4, Tapas is a party institution and one of the few mixed hang-outs on a heavily gay strip of lovely bars and clubs. For 14 years it’s been pumping out excellent house music and live percussion sets as well. Multi-leveled, with a dark, Moroccan feel, it’s easy to chill here, whether lounging or dancing your tail off! Like Soi 4 in general, weeknights can be hit-or-miss, but weekends are always packed and hopping.

CLUB 87 PLUS
Conrad Hotel, 87 Wireless Rd BTS Phloen Chit
Tel: 02-690-9087
Opening Hours: 6pm - 2am
Bigger, sleeker and sexier, the Conrad hotel’s recently relaunched flagship nightspot has targeted its audience from the get-go. Don’t be expecting minimalist jungle or Ibiza-style foam parties, but if you like to cut a little rug to tunes from the 80sand 90s, this joint should do just fine. The main draw here is the band, Citybeat (Tues- Sun, 10pm-2am). They know how to get a party going with their tried and tested repertoire of funked-up pop classics. DJ 90 provides the soundtrack for the daily buy-one-get-one-free Happy Hour (6-9:30pm), and takes centre stage on Monday evenings. Thursday is Ladies Night and Sunday’s Latin. Perhaps the coziest of all
Bangkok’s luxury hotel bars,
the leather couches at The

place, and the usually middle
-aged patrons live it up on
great wines, champagne and
strong cocktails in a quiet way. The high-ceilinged foyer offers perfect acoustics for the fabulous jazz band. Be prepared to be well-entertained. Worldclass talents are booked in continuously, guaranteeing top-notch jazz and always a warm audience rapport. BAMBOO BAR
The Oriental Bangkok, 48 Oriental Ave
Tel: 02-659-9000
Website: www.mandarinoriental.com
Opening Hours: Sun-Thu 11am-1am, Fri-Sat 11am-2am
This Bangkok landmark is a symbol of past glories of the East. Situated in one of the city’s most sophisticated hotels, the 50-yearold bar oozes class, sophistication and style. Reminiscent of a tropical film noir-setting, it features a jungle theme – bamboo, palm fronds and furry patterns. Small and busy, it’s nevertheless romantic and intimate – balanced by the legendary Russian jazz band that’s been on the stage here for ages. Monday through Saturday nights catch the sultry sounds of their current resident songstress, Cynthia Utterbach. Everybody’s sipping on faultless cocktails, mixed by skilled old-school bartenders and served by a superb staff. Ideal for a boozy night on your honeymoon. A definite big Bangkok must.

DIPLOMAT BAR
Conrad Bangkok, 87 Witthayu Rd BTS Ploen Chit
Tel: 02-690-9999
Website: www.conradbangkok.com
Opening Hours: Sun-Thu 6pm-1am, Fri-Sat 6pm-2am
An architecturally striking hotel bar, mixing a funky, stylish deco with soft teak sofas and an arresting chandelier hanging over the massive round bar. Bronze silks and wood dominate this dark, contemporary, but always relaxed place. A boozy, high-profile crowd fills the Diplomat Bar nightly, especially during the elongated, buy-one-get-one-free Happy Hour from4-7pm (standard drinks only). Very hip among the diplomatic corps (Witthayu is stuffed with embassies), trendy guys in suits and glitzy society ladies – ideal for people-ogling. But the main attraction here is more aural than visual and exceptional jazz acts are de rigueur. Until Feb 14, vibrant American jazz diva Tiffany Abril will be performing from Monday through to Saturday nights.

JAZZ GALLERY
2nd floor (beneath Gazebo Bar), 44 Chakrapong Rd, (just off Khao San Road
Tel: 02-629-5821~2
Opening Hours: 6pm-1am

The only thing “Khao San” about this standalone jazz lounge with a soft, elegant glow is its location, just off the raucous backpacker strip. Offering comfy armchairs on one side and casually riffing local jazz bands on the other, parquet floors, candlelight and discreet service, the Jazz Gallery is the most sophisticated venue to grace the area yet. And a great place to escape its moronic-music-loving masses. Think highbrow wine-bar for chardonnaysipping Coltrane-lovers. In addition to some of Thailand’s best jazz divas and ensembles, there’s a recessed art gallery, a smoking balcony (cigars available) and a wine cellar offering the best plonk in the neighbourhood. Mmmm, suave and smooth.

BROWN SUGAR
231/20 Sarasin Rd BTS Ratchdamri
Tel: 02-250-1826
Opening Hours: Mon-Sat 11am-1am, Sun 5pm-1am

Sarasin Road, bordering Lumpini Park, hosts a strip of teeming bars. The best one is definitely this long standing, smoky jazz club. The joint evokes a jazz haunt of yesteryear with dark woods, tight benches and a tiny stage. Newsweek called it ‘Asia’s Number One Spot’ and to prove the point, it’s packed every night. If you care for seats, arrive early, before the brilliant band starts at 9pm. You can have some decent pub grub, but it’s pricier than one might assume from the look of the haunt – same goes for the strong drinks. Sunday nights are the best – it’s the night off for most hotel bar singers, who all congregate here to let their hair down and jam with local pros.

SAXOPHONE PUB
3/8 Phaya Thai Rd BTS Victory Monument
Tel: 02-246-5472
Website: www.saxophonepub.com
Opening Hours: 6pm-2am

The cozy, unpretentious place is a Bangkok landmark when it comes to solid live jazz and blues. Just a stone’s throw away from the Victory Monument Skytrain Station, it’s nevertheless not a tourist hub. Filled with masses of fun-filled, youngish Thais and the odd foreigner thrown in, the spacious joint can pack up to 400 people on its homey, low-ceilinged, wood-filled floors. Each night, two talented Thai bands belt out sincere jazz, jazzy funk and R&B while the crowd feats on hearty Thai and Western fare served by friendly but mainly non-English-speaking staff. The inexpensive drinks are okay, but better copy the locals and stick to beer and whiskey. If you have a problem with crowds, come on a weeknight, play some pool and let friendly university students use you as walking dictionaries.

MOJO’S
10/20 Sukhumvit Soi 33 BTS Phrom Phong
Tel: 02-260-8429
Website: www.bangkokmojos.com
Opening Hours: 4pm-1am

The hip saloon is Bangkok’s self-pro-claimed smoking’ blues pub, although many come for the hefty Creole cooking alone – Fat boy Burgers and True Blues Bar-b-que from Big Bertha, their Apple wood Smoker (full of crabs and calories, but lip-smackin’ good). Bands churn out some of the best blues in town, enjoyed by an experienced crowd. The bar is bigger than other live music venues but still manages to keep up the atmosphere. Later into the evening, the tempo picks up and gets the joint hopping. Either fight for a stool at the sturdy redbrick wall or retire to the mezzanine. Check their website for a detailed music schedule of blues, jazz and R&B; they even do Irish Country, too.

OP.Place
Although mainly a popular sojourn for those looking to pick up Thai silk, antiques, jewellery, carpets and art, OP Place is also something of a destination in itself. Built in 1908 and constructed in elegant Neoclassical style, this impressive white stone Asian Heritage Shopping Centre, originally known as the Falck & Beidek Store, exudes an atmosphere reminiscent of old Bangkok.
It consists of two storeys with a three-storey tower at each end and wonderfully gabled porches. Vintage flair is added by a manually operated elevator. Not to be missed is the Ashwood Gallery, which features works ranging from 19th Century Burmese alabaster sculptures to Chinese and Japanese prints, and a branch of Chitralada shop, a project initiated by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.

Chatuchak Weekend Market
Opening Hours: From 08:00 - 18:00 hrs. on weekends and Fridays (wholesale day). Plant shops are open Wednesdays and Thursdays too from 07:00 - 18:00 hrs.

Covering 70 rai (35 acres) of land with over 15,000 stalls and more than 200,000 visitors every Saturday and Sunday, Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is the mother of all markets - and possibly one of the biggest and most famous markets in the world.
Areas are also demarcated in colour zones with clothing and fashion items grouped together, a section for household goods, crafts, pets, art and collectables, plants, wholesale items, food, and everything in between. Through the years vendors haven't always abided to the colour-coding, resulting in what could be called 'organised chaos'. How to get there: Take the skytrain (BTS) to Mo Chit station and exit down the right-hand stairs, follow the crowd for a five-minute walk, and you're there. Another option is to take the subway (MRT) to Chatuchak Park station, and follow the signage directives. For the plant and flower section, get off at Kampheng Phet MRT station (exit 3). Items at market: Clothing, jewellery, handicrafts, antiques, ceramics, pets, vintage magazines / stamps / coins, collector's items, knick-knacks and just about anything and everything else one could want from a Thai market, or any market.

Angelini Restaurant, Bangkok
Located in Riverside - Bangkok
Italian Cuisine:
Highly recommended for dinner are the six-course Angelini tasting menus. there are three selections-seafood, meat and vegetarian - to choose from, each of which can be enjoyed with or without specially chosen wines. From the a la carte menu, escabece mackerel and roasted beets salad is beautifully presented, the oily fish pairing very well with the tangy vegetables. Seared Chiang Mai crayish and baby spinach salad with oven-dried tomatoes and burrata cheese is another good choice for an appetiser. Pasta dishes are excellent here; try buckwheat strozzapreti with mussels and tuscan pecorino. Acqua pazza barramundi with cherry tomato, caper and parsley is very fresh, and would make an ideal light main course. For those with heartier appetites, roasted liquorice lamb loin with gingered carrot fondue and kidney is beautifully tender. Raviolo with pecorino and roasted figs makes for a successful end to the meal.

Vegetarian Cuisine:
An interesting menu that features wonderful and unique vegetarian dishes brimming with flavour. Nori-wrapped tofu, with wasabi mayo dip, brings a big box of soft cubes wrapped in tiny edible blankets of seaweed with a wasabi and mayonnaise dressing that is tangy, and highly recommended. "Certified organic" vegetable salad with miso dressing offers a fascinating, nutty-flavoured sauce for a salad which also includes apple slices and pine nuts amid rocket and other leaves. Thai green curry with vegetables and tofu is a big bowl with pea eggplant, baby squash, mushroom and tofu. Fried rice with vegetables, chilli and basil presents tofu, string beans, kale and peas in an impressive pile. Go for cold blueberry cheese cake, or orange and pumpkin cake, both of which are very good.

Thai Cuisine:
The extensive menu lists all the popular Thai dishes, as well as a wide selection of seafood, reflecting the diversity of Thai cuisine. Spicy pomelo salad has a refreshing sweetness and is served with prawn and chicken, while wing bean salad is flavoursome though somewhat on the dry side. Another mouth-watering temptation is chicken wrapped in pandanus leaf. Seafood specialities include stir-fried soft-shell crab with tamarind sauce. Grilled cotton fish served with Thai herbs is also an interesting choice; a curry helps to complement this dry dish. Another signature item, stir-fried river prawns with curry powder is also a popular choice. Baan Klang Nam 1 RestaurantBangkok
Located in Other Areas - Bangkok

Thai Cuisine :
This is one of the best places to demonstrate to newcomers the variety of seafood that Thailand has to offer. The ingredients and products are invariably fresh and not a little feisty. A starter of deep-fried, battered prawns with hot mayonnaise will get the taste buds off to a gentle start. Then try squid in lemon juice, a more exotic Thai dish with a chilli and herb sauce that has the juices flowing nicely. Deep-fried sea bass in fish sauce is exceptional, as is stir-fried crab with curry paste, featuring claws the size of monkey-wrenches. If the riot of flavours is simply too overwhelming, a sushi bar is also available.

A dish of Alaskan sea scallops exemplifies the Bed ethos, the flavour some molluscs smothered in creamy cauliflower broth and orange oil. Another house speciality for starters is roasted honey duck breast served with blood plum, watercress salad, and warm plum dressing. Slightly tangy and sweet at the same time, the dressing complements the tender meat perfectly. As a main course, tender olive oil-poached lamb is creatively presented, served with pine nut crumbs, potato and goat cheese puree, and matching perfectly with a zesty tomato jam. For dessert, poached Australian peach served with whipped raspberry, vanilla ice cream and caramelised puffed millet is a perfect way to round off the meal.

Authentic Thai cuisine with a slight hint of fusion. All the dishes here are beautifully presented, a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. There is a good selection of appetisers; start with foie gras beautifully balanced with tamarind sauce. Emerald prawns, pieces of succulent shellfish wrapped in pandan leaves and served with sesame sauce, is delicious. Also highly recommended is mixed satay with well marinated buffalo, pork and chicken strips. For a main dish try chuchee pla salmon, a wonderful fusion mix of the fish in a red curry sauce. Forgotten beef curry is a dish faithful to a traditional recipe for grilled 'kho khun' beef in a thick, flavourful curry sauce with herbs. Desserts, especially warm chocolate fondant served with green tea ice cream, can be sensational.

There is almost too much to choose from with Thai, Chinese, Italian, European and seafood selections on the lengthy menu. The setting is the star at Buritara but the food is also good with all dishes cooked simply and well with little or no frills. Try spicy female crab egg salad or, less fiery, fresh oysters or New Zealand mussels, or one of the many prawn dishes. of the dozens of Western-style dishes, duck breast with caramelised red onions and marmalade is an interesting version of duck a l'orange. Chote Chitr

Turn left on Thanon Tanao off Ratchadamnoen at the 1st traffic light past Democracy Monument and go 1000 m until you come to Soi Phraeng Phuton; it's 50 m down the soi on the left

Typical Thai Cuisine:

Chote Chitr is a remarkable little restaurant. Every major city in the world seems to have at least one of these places. Small, excellent food, family owned, located on a side street, and no plans to expand by changing the way things are done. And most important of all, food that is a true and accurate representation of the best a culture has to offer. If you’ve ever eaten in one of these places, you’ll know what I mean. Chote Chitr, located near Democracy Monument, is one of them. If you get a chance, do yourself a favor: Go there and enjoy some of Bangkok’s best food. Located in a shop house that is a part of a complex that is being preserved by local authorities, Chote Chitr is a tiny place with only five tables, one of which is usually the resting place for the family’s tiny and mildly obnoxious little dogs. A cadre of foreign foodies frequents the place so the remarkably long menu is in English as well as Thai. Prices by Thai standards are moderate, but when applying an international yardstick, they seem incredibly cheap for what you get

Gallery Cafe Restaurant Bangkok
Located in Old City - Bangkok

Thai Cuisine:
Some magnificent dishes served here, thanks to the skill and creativity of the chef. Winged bean spicy salad is probably the best in Bangkok, with big pieces of squid and some shrimps, plus peanuts and a hard-boiled egg, alongside the usual onions, chilli and other mildly piquant treasures. Thai tuna salad cleverly uses chunks of fresh tuna amid onions, peanuts, shredded mango and plenty of mint leaves and lettuce. Chicken wrapped with pandanus leaves brings five big, soft chunks veiled by leaves and dabbed with a delicious sweet sauce. Eggplant in bean sauce is great with jasmine rice, while sea bass in tamarind sauce is not bad either. The selection of desserts is limited in size, but the quality is among the best in town. After 20,000 birds served here over nearly 20 years, this famous dish will still not let you down. The breast is cooked perfectly so it is soft, tender and fragrant. Juice from the bird's legs combines with foie gras to make for a smooth, flavoursome sauce. Ma Maison Restaurant Bangkok
Located in Ploenchit / Wireless - Bangkok

French Cuisine:
Ma Maison serves up a modern interpretation of French cuisine that is no less complicated than the traditional model, but has a lighter touch. For starters duck confit and morel mushroom ravioli is fine, if slightly under-seasoned. Diver scallops in truffle crust is lush, sweet, and well-juxtaposed against a tangy citrus reduction. For a main course, Wagyu beef and foie gras millefeuille is a lesson in pure decadence; dressed in jus and served with truffle-dressed salad, the tower of tender beef and rich liver could easily have been overwhelming but a smart combination of flavours and textures puts it in a different league. Chocolate trio of fondant, croquant and sorbet is a novel idea, but only the croquant is noteworthy. The Noble-grade Maracaibo chocolate souffle with bourbon ice cream is good, but does not quite justify the 20-minute wait.

Niu’s Jazz Blues Bar Restaurant on Silom
Located in Silom
Italian Style:
If you are looking for a bar that offer’s a great selection of wine, is very intimate and romantic, and has a great cover band playing classic jazz and blues tunes, the newly opened Niu’s Jazz Blues Bar Restaurant on Silom is definitely worth checking out.
On the ground floor is the bar which has the stage to one side, and a lovely outside terrace area where you are still able to hear the live tunes from inside. Upstairs, you’ll find an Italian Restaurant offering Italian classic and some Thai/Italian fusion food.
I didn’t eat in the restaurant but the place looked buzzing and I’ve made a mental note to check it out when I next get the opportunity. My goal last night was to find a relaxed and mellow bar that I could take my girlfriend too were we could chat, listen to some cool sounds and share a nice bottle of wine: The Niu’s Jazz Blues Bar Restaurant on Silom did not disappoint.
The bar is rather small and dark, but this sets the tone nicely. Our wine was served in HUGE wine glasses which I kind of like, and there were hundreds of bottles to choose from, from all the major wine regions in the world ranging from 1,500b to 40,000 a bottle. On top of the extensive wine menu, there were also cocktails and spirits available.

Opus, Vineria Italiana (Wine Bar) – Bangkok

Located in Silom road
Italian Style:
On the corner of Silom Road and Thanon Pan is the famous, Hindu Temple Wat Khaek, using that as a marker turn down the road and you will eventually find the sign for Opus on the right side traveling along from Silom. The Wine Bar or Vineria Italiana, occupies the lower floor of a large house, which has been renovated but not severely so, as they had the good-sense to leave most of the colonial treatments intact. A bar fills the wall on the left side as you enter with an area with high wine-tasting tables directly in front and a glassed-in wine cellar in the rear with a table in the center. Directly in the front of the house is another dining area with lower and more traditional dining furniture, although personally I would rather consume the dishes chosen for this menu: small plates and other tapas-style dishes at bar level tables—it just seems more natural. On the upper floor they have a private dining room and space to build-out others, when necessary. The managing Director, Alex Morabito is a suave and genial host, very familiar with Italian wines from all regions of Italy; he will help you pair them with the dishes from the concise, but well chosen menu. I sampled a couple of small-plates on one visit and the cooking that is produced here is far superior to the minimum one requires to accompany a bottle chosen from their vast selection of Italian wines. They have a brief choice of wines-by-the-glass, although I would expect that to expand as demand requires it.

Featuring cuisine from northern India, Rang Mahal is arguably one of the finest Indian restaurants in town. Complimentary crispy papadam with condiments are perfect for nibbling as the appetite builds. From the tandoor oven, tandoori murgh or chicken marinated in yoghurt and oriental spices then cooked, is an excellent choice. Succulent and tasty, it comes as a half or whole chicken. Dal-maa Rang Mahal consists of black lentils cooked with asafetida, garlic and tomatoes and simmered overnight, enriched with butter and cream, while zard dal is a somewhat spicier option featuring lentils finished with a tempering of cumin and chillies. Vegetable Jaipuri from the vegetarian list is delectable, especially when eaten with one of the traditional Indian breads such as tandoori naan or roti, or basmati rice creations. kulfi falooda, saffron-flavoured Indian ice cream served with glass noodles, makes for a good closure.

People make a pilgrimage to this nondescript, down-at-heels locale because they prize the wonderful food served without frills. Archari chicken is a must for starters, with four boneless chunks of chicken marinated in yoghurt and a ginger garlic paste with hot spices, all cooked in a clay oven. Chicken tikka masala is a curry mixed with egg and mild spice, and provides a breast and leg in a sensational, bronze-coloured sauce. Shahi korma mixes chunks of cottage cheese cooked in butter and cream with mild spices, while palak paneer is also cottage cheese-based but includes plenty of finely chopped spinach, which goes well with plain naan. Vegetable seekh kebab is a fun mix of boiled veggies with chick pea powder rolled into cylinders. Desserts may offer strange after-tastes to the uninitiated.

Another variation from the norm is chuchee salmon, a delicious recipe using a fish that is not traditional but works admirably in this instance. Sirocco Restaurant Bangkok

Mediterranean Cuisine:
Renowned for its dinners featuring celeb international chefs, Sirocco's menu uses high-quality imported ingredients. The challenges of open-air, high-altitude dining means that some of the items can be inconsistent in quality. Still, the food here is creatively presented and occasionally sublime. For starters, pan-fried scallops with riesling butter are succulent, huge and sweet, while Alaskan king crab cake and fried calamari in a light mustard cream served atop mesclun is scrumptious. Pan-seared foie gras is fresh, offering a delight against cranberry compote. Stir-fried black pepper crab casserole is a delicious, fresh take on a classic Asian dish.
